Rider Guidelines

• The Pertemps Champion Willberry Charity Derby will be the last race on the card on Monday 27th August 2018 at Epsom Racecourse
• It will be run outside the Rules of Racing, although all horses must be vaccinated in accordance with the Rules of Racing
• There will be 12 riders only
• Riders must source and provide a suitably trained horses for the race, trained by a licensed trainer
• 1 Mile 4 Furlongs - to be started by flag
• Weight: 12 stone (including saddle)
• For 4-year olds and upwards who have run at least three times under the recognised Rules of Racing
• All horses to be rated: 0-125 for hurdlers/steeplechasers; 0-85 for flat horses (NB - if a horse has run under both codes, it must fit both criteria)
• Please note: Any horse that does not fit the above criteria will be subject to a handicapping system at the discretion of Epsom Racecourse
• Horse details will be required approx. two weeks before the race on a form that will be supplied - Please note that a copy of the passport including full and complete vaccination records must be submitted at this time and the passport must also accompany the horse on the raceday for inspection by the BHA Veterinary Officer as required
• Applications to ride in the race must be submitted by midnight on 21st February. If applying by post applicants must use the official application form which must be received no later than 21st February
• Selected applicants will be notified by Friday 9th March
• Riders will be selected via a committee decision and no correspondence will be entered into
• 18 years and over
• You must be a good rider and be able to provide evidence of this on your application form
• Riders must all make themselves available to attend an assessment day on 9th May 2018 at the British Racing School, Newmarket at their own expense of approx. £100 unless excused by the selection committee
• All riders must provide a certificate of fitness from their own GP upon selection, and must agree to receive medical attention should it be deemed necessary
• Riders must provide their own equipment including mandatory back protector and skull cap as laid down within the Rules of Racing and in line with current BHA standards, which can be found online at www.britishhorseracing.com
• Whips may be carried but are to be used for correction only
• All riders must ensure that they are familiar with both their mount and equipment ahead of raceday and must ride the horse at a gallop using all raceday tack, equipment and kit at least once in advance of the race
• Each rider will be insured by Epsom Racecourse for Personal Accident & Public Liability from Weighing Out until Weighing In
• It is also strongly advised that the riders ask to be on their trainer's insurance policy whilst they are training for the race
• Each rider will be required to pay a £50 insurance premium at time of selection with their deposit - and details of what this insurance includes will be provided
• Once selected for the race you must pay a deposit of £300 (this includes the compulsory payment of £50 to cover your insurance for the race) by cheque, credit/debit cards or BACS by 23rd March and pledge to raise a minimum of £5000 in sponsorship - A 'riders pack' for successful applicants will provide guidelines on sponsorship and fundraising
• Successful applicants must make themselves available at a mutually convenient time to do PR if required
• Successful applicants will receive two complimentary tickets to a three course sit down lunch on the day and extra tickets and tables are available for families and guests - details will be provided upon selection. Owners and Trainers badges will also be provided
